Vinyl Windows became very popular in new home construction around 1990. Their popularity continued through 2005. A large percentage of homes built in this time period featured vinyl windows. If you own a home with vinyl windows that was built in this era; it’s just a matter of time before you need to perform a vinyl window repair yourself, or hire a reputable window repair contractor to do the work for you.

Vinyl Window Repair Tips:

Tip 1 | Identifying Vinyl Window Repair Issues:

Once a year you should take time to inspect your Vinyl Windows for damage. A thorough inspection of each and every window in your home can reduce the chance of water damage caused by faulty or damaged vinyl components. Look for these issues:

  • Broken Vinyl Window Frame: Inspect the window frame carefully for cracks. A small crack can become a BIG leak.
  • Hail Damage: Check the outside of the lower window frame for hail damage. This is a common problem in the Midwest including our local area of Naperville, Plainfield, and Joliet. Cracks or holes in the lower frame can be the source of a serious leak.
  • Screw Holes: Look for loose or missing screws. Tighten any loose screws and replace any missing screws.
  • Broken Sash Interlock: Inspect the area around the window sash. If the interlock area is cracked the window will not slide freely and may not seal properly.
  • Broken Nail Fin: If you already have a serious leak and there is no visible damage, the problem may be a broken nail fin. This is the strip used to fasten the window frame to the wood framing of the house. The problem will be unveiled as you remove the damaged material surrounding the window.
  • Alarm Sensors: This is one area that is often overlooked when inspecting your home for vinyl window repair problems. When a third party installs a security system in your home, they drill holes in the vinyl frame. If improperly done, the oversized hole around the sensor can be the source of a small leak. You can alleviate this issue by simply caulking around the security sensor.

Tip 2 | Glass Pane Repair

The average DIY Handyman can replace a broken glass pane. The most critical thing here is to purchase a replacement glass pane that is exactly the same as the original glass. Carefully measure the height, width, and thickness of the glass. Be sure to use the same type of glass as well.

Tip 3 | Jamb Liner Repair

The area surrounding the window sash is critical for smooth operation of your window. If any of these components need to be replaced contact the original window manufacturer to purchase genuine OEM parts. This will save you from a GIANT headache if you are performing the vinyl window repair yourself.
