How to Build a Bay Window Seat With Storage Step 4: Finish and Paint

Prior to painting your Bay Window Seat with Storage project, be sure to caulk all gaps between the wood structure and original walls. Apply caulking along the back wall and the ends of the new vertical face of the storage area. Allow the caulking to cure thoroughly before applying paint.

Fill and cover any nail heads or exposed wood screws. Use a putty knife and high-quality wood putty to fill these voids. Be sure the putty is completely cured before you begin painting.

Sand any rough areas to remove any wood splinters and defects in the wood. Wipe down the entire surface with a tack cloth prior to painting. For the best results you should prime bare wood before applying a top coat using high-quality finish paint.

Paint all wood trim and the top plywood deck the same color as the wood trim around the bay window. Use this same color to paint the Wainscot. If the vertical area of your Bay Window Seat with Storage is covered with drywall or sheetrock, paint the vertical area the same color as the walls of the room.

Decorate Your Bay Window Seat With Storage

Once the paint has completely dried, you can decorate your new creation. A fast and easy way to bring your bench to life is to lay a blanket over the hinged area of the top deck. Add a few plush, decorative, throw pillows or accent cushions in complimentary colors to ensure that your sitting area matches the décor of the room.

You can also cover the top of entire sitting area with a foam cushion. Cut a sheet of 2” foam to the same shape as the ¾” plywood decking. Cover the cushion with a fabric that matches or compliments the colors of the room.

Bay Window Bench

Your new Bay Window Seat with Storage is a great place to sit and relax in an intimate setting while reading your favorite book. Rather than covering the bay windows with heavy curtains or drapery, use sheer curtains to accentuate the area yet allowing you to enjoy the natural light.

Place a game table or small tea table adjacent to your sitting area so you can enjoy soothing cup of hot tea, cocoa, or your favorite beverage.
