Cleaning Window Tracks with Ease Using Baking Soda & Vinegar

August 27, 2017

Cleaning window tracks and sliding patio doors can be a nasty job that takes a lot of elbow grease. If your windows or sliding doors have been ignored for a few seasons it may be time to do a little maintenance. While I hate the thought of cleaning window tracks myself, I have discovered a little-known trick than can turn this tedious task into something that is quick and easy. No scrubbing required! I like the sound of that.

The only tools you need for effortlessly cleaning window tracks are these common household items:

  • Vinegar
  • Baking Soda
  • Spray Bottle
  • Q-Tips or an Old Toothbrush
  • Paper Towels or Shop Rags

Simple Steps for Cleaning Window Tracks

Step 1 – The Shop Vac: The first thing I like to do is vacuum the window tracks with my shop vac. This removes all the loose debris before I get stared with the deep cleaning process. Skipping this step can make the task more daunting as you try to wipe off the grime in step five.

Step 2 – Clean the Windows: I like to wash the glass itself before I clean the window tracks, otherwise the dirt from the glass will fall down onto my nice clean tracks. Check out our article on spring window cleaning tips.

Step 3 – Apply Baking Soda: Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda along the entire length of the lower window track. A good rule of thumb is to spread one tablespoon of baking soda per foot. So, you will need 4 tablespoons for a 48” wide window.

Step 4 – Spray the Vinegar: Fill the spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of water and vinegar. Spray the vinegar mixture along the track and sit back and watch the reaction as the Baking Soda goes to work. Let it bubble for about 5 or 10 minutes.

Step 5 – Wipe the Track: Using paper towel or heavy-duty shop rags, wipe the entire track clean. You may need to use Q-Tips or an old toothbrush to reach deep into the corners or to remove any stubborn debris.

Step 6 – Final Clean: If your windows were particularly nasty, you may need to perform one final wipe. Spray the area with the vinegar solution one more time and wipe the tracks again with a clean rag.
